What is on your To Do list that you just won’t

Stepmom rip

Stir Crazy trailer get to for some reason or another?

There is a big difference between can’ts and won’ts- I’m talking about wont’s - What task do you have on your list that you just will NOT complete?

I was reviewing my list the other day and realized that the same one item just sits there week after week. I keep transferring it on to new “To Do” lists and I keep conveniently avoiding it. What is going on that I will not just sit down and tackle this item on my list? After some consideration, I see what is at the root of my denial….it’s fear.

I am not afraid that I can’t accomplish the task, or I that I won’t know how to do it, I am afraid of the change it will cause. Now the most ridiculous thing about that statement is that the change I am referring to, is for the good! Accomplishing this “To Do” will bring me more clients, more profits and will grow my business. But change, no matter how good it is, is not always easy.

  • Did you know that nearly 1/3 multimillion dollar lottery winners become bankrupt in just a few short years after they’re big win?
  • Or that 95% of all weight loss patients regain their weight plus some within 5 years?

Why does this happen?

Any type of change, whether good or bad, takes us out of our equilibrium, or comfort zone, where we are safe and secure. Where we know the environment, the players and the results of our actions.

Anytime we step out of this equilibrium our powerful brains, which have grown accustomed to where they are at, interpret this change as danger and go into high alert. In fact, there is a certain part of our brain called the psycho-cybernetic mechanism, which sends a signal to the rest of our brains to STOP THE CHANGE! This is exactly why stress, doubt or anxiety start to show up- they are just messages from our brains to stop what we are doing and return to our comfort zones. And most of the time, we listen. We go right back to where we were, in the safe zone, even if that safe zone means being penniless and overweight.

Successful entrepreneurs, “feel the fear and do it anyways.” They are aware of their thought patterns, recognize their comfort zones and still move forward. They do not retreat from opportunity or crumble in the face of adversity. Fear, doubt and anxiety aren’t road blocks, just chemical reactions designed to keep us complacent. And no body ever built a successful business by staying complacent.

So what am I going to now?

First, I am going to change my belief about this knot in my stomach. Rather than using it as an excuse to withdraw, I am going to see it as a reminder of my courage and growth. Second, I am going to just do it already!

As the saying goes, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.”
